I've often heard my mistress
read about the little mouse,
who never would on Christmas Eve
stir through the little house.

And so I thought this Christmas Eve
that I would stay awake---
and check upon this Mr. Mouse---
for curiousity's sake.

I snuggled by the warm fireplace
and all the world was still.
I even took a small catnap,
as kittens often will.

When suddenly I heard a noise
high in our chimney top,
and then right out from our fireplace,
a wee man seemed to pop.

He had a lot of toys
in a sack upon his back,
and he brought along his tiny elves
to help him with his pack.

He set to work with utmost speed
and filled each tiny sock.
Then he sat down by our fireplace
and smoked his pipe and rocked.

While tiny elves went scampering
around our Christmas tree,
and in a twinkling of an eye
had trimmed it dazzingly.

But Santa Claus---by then I'd guessed---
saw me watching him.
He picked me up and held me tight,
with such a merry grin.

He stroked my ears until I slept,
then faintly I heard him say,
"God bless this house and may it have
a happy Christmas Day."
